Just One Quilt: Lisa’s Story

Lisa Naylor is a very positive force in the modern quilting scene here in the UK. She has been instrumental is setting up Modern Guilds in Yorkshire and ran the shop Simply Solids with Justine Henshaw until recently.

I am very grateful to Lisa for meeting me in a pub in Leeds one weekday evening back in 2014 just because I called her up and showed an interest in the modern quilt scene. She was full of enthusiasm from the moment we started chatting, and that has never dwindled over the years. Her summer holiday this year is 4 days at Festival of Quilts in Birmingham – proof this craft is a big deal for her!

I was quite tempted to steal this quilt!

Through Lisa I have made a lot of new friends and work connections. I have very fond memories of my first freemotion quilt class with Trudi Wood, who quilted this project too. I have also been inspired by international guests Simply Solids brought to our part of the world including Tula Pink and Krista Hennebury.

The Spacedust Quilt in the film really is beautiful. There are numerous versions online but I think Lisa’s colour combinations, and all those happy Cotton and Steel Basics, is truly the best one out there.

Lisa is curious and has great skill in bringing people together. Even though the Simply Solids era has sadly ended, she has her own Block of the Month programmes, and retreats with her Modern Quilt Club. I know that there will be loads more on the horizon too and wish her lots of luck with her new adventures.
